Polynomials in Several Variables
- When dealing with polynomials of several variables, some
things take on new meaning.
- Like terms are terms that have exactly
the same variables with exactly the same exponents on
each variable (or are constants).
- The degree of a term is the sum of all
the exponents of the variables of that term .
- Most things, however, are exactly the same.
- The degree of a polynomial is the
highest degree of any of its terms.
- Addition and subtraction follow exactly the same
procedures.
- Multiplication is the same.
- The only difference in evaluation of a polynomial in
several variables is that you need a value for each of
the variables (instead of just one for the single
variable).
